Special Guest Kimberly Dean + Giveaway!

Today I'm super thrilled to have Kimberly Dean as a special guest. A few years ago I was lucky enough to be a part of Samhain's superhero anthology with Kimberly, and lemme tell ya, she knows how to pen the smexy. *wipes brow* Her latest book, Roxie, is book 3 in her Triple X series. I absolutely love the concept of these stories, and her topic today is one of my faves--research! Also make sure to checkout Kimberly's rafflecopter giveaway for a chance at winning a print copy of Maxie.

When Research is Fascinating

Writers are a creative bunch. Stories pop into our heads, and we just want to write them.  We want to put fingers to keyboards and just go, but the truth is that sometimes we need to slow down and do research.  Depending on the subject matter, this can be tedious.  In my case, though, it was so fascinating that I had to remind myself that I needed to stop learning and get back to my stories.  What was so interesting?  I was digging into the research done on identical twins separated at birth.
My Triple X series is about identical triplets reuniting and finding the men that they love. Lexie (Book 1) was taken in by a wealthy family, but never allowed to forget that she was adopted.  Maxie (Book 2) was raised as a single child, never knowing that she had a biological family out there.  Finally, there’s Roxie (Book 3), who never made it out of the foster care system.  The sisters are identical in appearance, but they’re different people.  I needed to know how different they might be and in what ways they should still be the same.  It all came down to the old nature versus nurture question.

The University of Minnesota has done a lot of research into twins.  They’ve found that even when raised separately, twins often have certain traits in common.  They tend to have similar life experiences and gravitate to similar careers.  They use the same gestures and, in photographs, often pose in the same stance.  The strong connection they feel upon reuniting was something researchers always noted.  The story of the Jim twins, though, is extraordinary.  It’s the most commonly quoted case study I found, and it boggles the imagination.

As I was writing these books, more stories about twins kept popping up in the news.  There was a story just this year of twin sisters reuniting after twenty-five years of separation when they found one another on YouTube and Facebook.  A similar story was about twins reuniting in China.  And there was even more.

See?  The research just pulls you in, but I eventually had to step back and use what I’d learned to make Lexie, Maxie, and Roxie believable characters. In the end, the sisters look identical.  They’re very connected and share a deep love for one another. They have a common habit of cocking their foot back on their heels, yet life experience has molded their personalities and styles to be different.  Lexie is well-mannered, hard-working, and always trying to please others.  Maxie is timid and sweet, yet wants to be adventurous.  Finally, there’s Roxie.  She’s wild, bold, and sexy.
It’s her story that’s releasing this week, and it’s the completion of the Triple X series.  If the books are half as compelling as the research was, then I consider my job done.  But I’m interested.  Do you know any identical siblings?  In what ways are they the same and how are they different?

It’s time for this identical triplet to meet her match.

Can a wild child ever really be tamed? Growing up in foster care has made Roxie Cannon tough and self-reliant, but being alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She’s finally found her sisters. Is it time she met her match?

Roxie should be on top of the world. She’s formed bonds with identical sisters she never knew she had, and she’s buying the biker bar she’s managed for years. The feisty brunette has everything she’s ever wanted. Almost. Two things still elude her: answers to why her family was split apart and a man of her own to love. Seeing her sisters with their soul mates has made her aware she’s still the odd one out. Yet that all starts to change when a rough-and-tumble hottie from her past walks in The Ruckus’ door, wanting a second chance.

Billy knows trouble when he sees it, and Roxie is commotion in motion. They’ve always set sparks off one another. This time, he’s promised himself he won’t get burned. Yet things get serious when he learns of Roxie’s quest to find her parents. Can he save his hot-blooded lover from being hurt? Or will the wounded little girl inside her never trust him again?

My Writing Process

I was tagged by the awesomely fantastical Selena Illyria--a multi-published author, part vampire, part pixie who was born with a need to write and enable. To read her post on her writing process, click here.

1) What am I working on?

Right now I'm working on Triple Knockout. It's a fantastically smexy m/m/f menage that features two boxers and the lucky lady who benefits from their dirty skills in and out of the ropes. It's set in the Checking It Twice and The Naughty List world, so expect to see some familiar faces! After this book is wrapped up and in my editor's hands I'll be working on another exciting project--the first title in a brand new spinoff series I'm doing that follows the Soul Collectors from That Old Black Magic. To learn a little bit more about Kissin' Hell, you can read my blog post here.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I'd say my main difference is that I incorporate a lot of humor into my books. Most of my characters have a very different outlook on life, so that usually comes through in the situations they find themselves in. On the flip side of this, I also like to delve deeper into the emotional side of things, and even explore darker topics. I think infusing the humor in there keeps a good balance between the two.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I have a dirty mind. No, seriously. It's just the way my brain works. Basically my muse requires 2 things to be satisfied: sex and...okay, possibly it's just sex. A cool, quirky plot and the occasional pufferfish reference are just bones I throw to her every once in a while. And yes, I worked bone into the sentence. I get double bonus points and a Snickers bar for that.

4) How does your writing process work?

My only real ritual when it comes to writing is creating a soundtrack for my books. I've always been inspired by music, so it definitely helps me get into the groove of a story and its characters. Aside from that, I have a general idea of the main plot points, the ending, and how I'm going to get there before I start writing. Sometimes (aka: all the time) the characters decide they want to do things their own way and the actual finished book turns out being slightly different from how I visualized it in my head. That's okay though. Because 9 times out of ten, my characters are far more brilliant than me. Again, that's okay. Because I'm a better air guitarist. And we all know that's a life skill that trumps pretty much everything else.

So that's a little peek into the insanity that is my writing process.

For Monday, July 7th continuation of the tour, I tagged Kelly Apple, who has a love affair with zombies, adores werewolves, and consorts with demons. Ahh, the life of an author.

Coming Soon to an ereader near you!

Okay, I've been sitting on this announcement for a while, but it's time to let the cat out of the bag. Well, the cat and dog, in this case. A brand spankin' new That Old Black Magic spinoff series is on it's way! And I'm doing something pretty exciting and special for it's launch. As many of you know, I'm part of the Red Hot Authors group. If you haven't already checked us out, please do! Lots of amazingly talented writers and fabulous books to discover! Our next collection is going to be centered around Halloween, so I had an aha moment. What better way to introduce new readers to the That Old Black Magic world while also giving my wonderful, awesometastically dedicated fans some new magical smexiness to drool over? So long story short, that's how Kissin' Hell was born. I already have an amazing cover, thanks to the uber talented Becky McGraw. I can't show it off until the Red Hots start their big cover reveals in October, but in the meantime here's a teaser peek at the blurb and the theme songs for the hero and heroine--Jericho and Lola.

The Soul Collectors have always played a fun, integral part of the That Old Black Magic world, and I'm super excited to share their stories with y'all!

Kissin' Hell~ Coming October 15!

There are two certainties in life soul collector and hellhound Jericho Stryker knows too well—Death never takes a holiday, and women are typically more trouble than they’re worth. That goes double for his personal nemesis and regular pain in his backside, Lola McKenna. Sure, the luscious little hellcat gets his blood boiling in more ways than one, but some scratches are best left un-itched. That determination is strained to the max when a botched soul acquisition job lands him on the same case as Lola.

Fetching a stubborn soul from a haunted bordello should be a piece of cake. Unfortunately for Lola, she has to deal with Jericho horning in on her bounty. Attempting to keep her cool and her wits around her sinfully sexy adversary? Easier said than done. Especially when she finds herself locked overnight with Jericho. Not strangling him before sunrise? A faint possibility. Ignoring the lusty, depraved sexual fantasies he awakens in her? A snowball’s chance in hell of happening. But worse of all is the very real possibility that he could steal the one thing she most fears losing to him—her heart.

Guilty as Sin: Sin City Series Book 1

A UFC fighter caught up in the world of organized crime risks his one chance at freedom to save the woman he loves.
As a UFC fighter, Sinclair Reed aka Sinister 3, always had a plan. Getting tangled up with the mob, or falling in love with a woman he can’t forget, never factored into it.
After a brief affair, bestselling author, Cherie Bouchard, thought she’d seen the last of UFC light middleweight champ “Sinister 3” when they parted ways at the airport. Determined to discover if her feelings are real for Sinclair, or the result of her hopeless romantic imagination, she purchases tickets to his fight when the UFC comes to town.
As the lovers re-unite, they discover someone wants him dead, and Sinclair has twenty-four hours to choose between Cherie and freedom. For a smart guy like him, it should be a no-brainer. When it comes to the woman he loves, he’s as guilty as sin.

Unspoken communication passed between them—desire, longing, raw sensuality. She gestured between them. “So, that’s all this is between us? Lust?”
“Is that what you came to ask me?”
Swallowing hard, her head bobbed an affirmative. “I suppose.”
Sinclair cast his gaze downward, before locking it onto her. “No. Yes.” He sighed in exasperation. “Truth is…I haven’t stopped thinking about you since I said good-bye.” The admission lightened a burden he hadn’t been aware he’d carried.
Her breath caught, and she pressed a hand to her heart. “Really?”
“Yeah, really.” Truth sets you free.
“Jesus H… I thought it was just me.” Pacing in a small circle, she gestured in a wild fashion. “I tried so hard to put you behind me, to tell myself it was only a good time… But I just couldn’t—”
He interrupted. “Get me out of your head?”
Sheepish, she nodded.
“Yeah,” he admitted. “That’s how I felt, but about you.” Sinclair waved his arm in a helpless gesture. “I didn’t want to hurt you. You’re an amazing woman. But with my training schedule, and the distance—I didn’t want to commit to something—”
“Stop.” Cherie raised both hands in front of her. “Don’t. I thought maybe if I saw you again, I’d see you for who you are and be able to get you out of my system once and for all. Turns out—not so much.”
“This’ll make me sound like more of a jerk, but just because I’ve thought of you often, doesn’t mean I’ve been celibate since we parted.”
A light laugh accompanied her shrug. “I didn’t expect you to be. We had no commitment. I’ve been on a date or two as well.”
Unexpected jealousy reared its ugly head. Sinclair bristled, a low growl sounding in his throat at the thought of her with another man, his hands on her, fucking her.
Curiosity etched her brow. “Let’s agree not to talk about our sex lives,” she suggested.
Sinclair gave a curt nod. “Agreed.” He shifted in his seat, legs splayed.
Her eyes were drawn to his crotch. Moistening her lips again, she quickly averted her gaze.
“Cherie,” he said, voice low when he spoke. “It’s not that I don’t want to talk to you. I just can’t think of anything coherent to say. Not when I want you the way I do.”
“You’ve already warned me. Understood.”
For a moment, he wondered if she’d walk away. He half hoped she would, simplifying their lives.
With deliberate slowness, she untied the knot at her waist, letting the sweater fall open and hang from her shoulders to reveal the silky fabric of her tank top for a moment before letting it fall to the floor. Cherie shimmied her shoulders, the thin straps of her top, sliding down her arms.
Sinclair sucked in a breath as the top snagged on her beaded nipples for a second, the built-in bra dissolving as the shirt slid down her torso. “You don’t have to do this.”
“Oh, believe me, I want to.” Cherie wriggled her hips, and in a dull swish of clothing, jeans, shirt and panties pooled on the floor at her feet.
His erection grew as his eyes roamed over her body from head to toe. Nude, she posed in front of him, one hand on jutted hip. He watched her breasts rise and fall with each panting breath. She lifted her chin, and he took the hint, unzipping his jeans, and sliding the material down over his hips, lifting his ass to remove them altogether. He lowered himself into the seat a little more, cock straining against his boxer briefs.
She tilted her head in a coy gesture. “It’s not a fair fight.”
With a chuckle, he stripped off his underwear, allowing his cock to spring to attention. The scent of her arousal wafted over to him, assaulting his senses. He extracted a condom from the wallet in the back pocket of his jeans, and rolled it down his dick.
Swaying her hips, she sauntered toward him, and reached for his T-shirt. He lifted his arms for her to take it off.
His arms circled her waist. “Come here, baby.”
An ear-to-ear grin on her face, Cherie climbed onto his lap, one knee on either side of his thighs, hands resting on his shoulders.
Sinclair gripped her hips, guiding her pussy until she was poised over his cock which strained to get inside her. He searched her eyes for any sign of hesitation. “You sure?” he asked.
“Absolutely.” She lowered her hips until the plump head of his cock probed her slick entrance. Her hot, wet pussy melted around his hard shaft as he slid home. Her head tipped back, eyes rolled up to the ceiling.
“Fuck, baby.” Sinclair panted, pressing a kiss to her collarbone, his tongue licking a path along the ridge and up the column of her throat. He resisted the urge to flip her to her back and fuck her like an animal in heat. “I’ve missed you.”
The tears shining in her eyes tugged at his heart. “I’ve missed you, too, Sin,” she whispered, using the nickname she’d given him as a play on his fighting name, “Sinister Three”.
“Ride me, Sweetheart. Now.”
